Guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) is the direct precursor of creatine in the body of all vertebrates. Creatine synthesis requires arginine, glycine and methionine, and three organs which are kidney, liver and muscle. Creatine biosynthesis is a two-step process. In the kidney, arginine transfers its amidino group to glycine to synthesize GAA, which is then transferred to the liver where S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) gives its methyl group to GAA to synthesize creatine.
